ISE commits to greener events

ISE has been working with the Carbon Consultancy to review and reduce the carbon footprint of its events.

Sustainable business practices play a key role in attracting and retaining emerging talent, so it’s no surprise that more employers are taking accountable actions to be greener in their recruitment practices.

ISE supports the Sustainable Recruitment Alliance (SRA), which now has 85 employers signed up to cut waste and make carbon savings when hiring students.

We are also committed to building a greener future by working with the Carbon Consultancy to review and reduce the carbon footprint of our events.

This includes offsetting carbon through the consultancy, benefiting projects across the globe that work within local communities to decarbonise electricity grids, reduce deforestation, improve energy efficiency and sequester carbon.

Early impact

Our summer Student Recruitment Conference is the must-attend event for many ISE members. Run over two days, this year 600 delegates attended either in Manchester or virtually.

Carbon Consultancy assessed the carbon footprint of our flagship conference based on travel, accommodation, food and drink, materials and waste, as well as the event space and power usage.

More than 90% of attendees told us that the carbon footprint of this conference is important to them, so we were encouraged to hear that it was a third of that of similar sized events.

Measures we put in place to achieve this included selecting a location which was relatively easy to travel to, providing an option for delegates to attend online and using electronic signage.

Greener events

We are now working with Carbon Consultancy to further reduce our footprint by up to a fifth over the next five years.

ISE’s Student Recruitment Conference 2024 will take place 24-25 June at The Eastside in Birmingham, which has the Silver Green Tourism Award and our overspill Clayton Hotel has Gold.

Plans are also in place to encourage delegates to take sustainable travel options such as travel by train. And we will review the menu to be more mindful of the carbon impact of our food and drink choices.
